Joseph’s House and Shelter in downtown Troy offers homes single adults and families with children a warm and safe place to rest, hot nutritious meals, medical care, personal items and laundry facilities. Advocates work with guests to identify housing and services in accordance with goals guests set themselves. We depend on our community to collaborate with us to provide these services.

Our needs are always changing. Please contact Joseph’s House and Shelter to discuss specific opportunities or to schedule a speaker from Joseph’s House and Shelter for your organization. |

Joseph’s House holds a Holiday party for families who have been guests in our shelter over the year. Volunteers decorate, prepare snacks, donate and/or wrap gifts, or provide entertainment at our party. |

Many friends of Joseph’s House participate in our Winter Walk for the Homeless, a walk through downtown Troy that traces the footsteps of the homeless. Walkers recruit pledges and raise thousands of dollars towards the needs of our homeless guests. Volunteers also help out with the weekend’s pancake breakfast and wreath sale. The Winter Walk is held on the first Saturday of December. |

Organize a “drive” for items we always need. Toiletries, especially toothpaste, toothbrushes, and deodorant are always in demand (We hand out 1,000 toothbrushes a year!). Disposable diapers, socks for children and adults, and school supplies are also on our wish list. Powdered drink mix (Tang, ice tea, lemonade, etc.) and coffee are very much appreciated. |
We rely on volunteers to prepare lunch and dinner for approximately 40 people on Saturdays and Sundays. Meals may be prepared in our kitchen or delivered to Joseph’s House. Volunteers have prepared a variety of food, from ethnic dishes to pizza, to family favorites. Consider including: - A main entrée such as a soup, a casserole, meat, or pasta…
- Cooked vegetables and/or a salad…
- A starch such as potatoes, rice, or rolls…
- Something sweet for dessert…
- We provide beverages. Volunteers are always welcome to eat with our guests.

Hospitality Volunteers spend time with guests and help with chores that keep the shelter running. We need hospitality volunteers weeknight evenings and all day on weekends. We provide a thorough orientation for Hospitality Volunteers. |
